At the 2025 ESPY Awards, the focus was meant to be on NBA icon Oscar Robertson, who received the distinguished Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
Russell Westbrook had the privilege of presenting the award to a player he frequently acknowledges as a key influence on his career. During the event, Westbrook spoke about the importance of the triple-double in basketball and the individual who pioneered the achievement.
“I may be biased, but there’s nothing cooler in basketball than achieving a triple-double. Like I said, I may be biased though, but that’s just my opinion,” Westbrook stated.

Robertson made history as the first NBA player to average a triple-double for an entire season. StatMuse reports that his peak came during the 1961–62 season, where he registered 41 triple-doubles.
Questions Surrounding Russell Westbrook’s Free Agency
Westbrook has spent recent years navigating a series of team changes. After his stint with the Denver Nuggets, he currently finds himself without a contract. On The Allen Stiles Show, Michael Scotto from HoopsHype noted the unexpected nature of Westbrook’s situation.
It’s interesting to see how he ended up in Denver leading to this moment. Typically, when you opt out, you’d expect to have something lined up, yet here we are, Scotto remarked.
During his time with the Nuggets, Westbrook put up averages of 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. Even with these respectable numbers, no team has signed him as of yet.
Over his career, Westbrook has represented multiple teams, including the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers. The former MVP is now waiting for his next chance.
