As an ardent fan of the sport, basketball legend Lisa Leslie has been attentively observing the emerging talents and the unexpected decisions made during the NCAA transfer portal season.
With her wealth of experience in basketball, Leslie assessed the choices that left college basketball followers astonished — particularly those surrounding the women’s teams at South Carolina and LSU — and shared insights she felt all student-athletes ought to consider before entering the portal.
“My biggest suggestion [to college transfers] is remember that you’re the same player,” Leslie stated. “Your work ethic must keep evolving, and you need to take a hard look at yourself to identify the strengths and weaknesses and how to address them.”
The former WNBA star noted that challenges are a common part of any athlete’s journey and stressed the importance of confronting difficulties directly rather than viewing the transfer portal as an easy fix.
“Often, we want to avoid tough situations and seek comfort in those moments. But life isn’t always straightforward. Sometimes, it’s tough, and you need to find ways to navigate through those challenging times.”
“Players sometimes lack the patience to stick it out. Everyone wants immediate playtime and to be involved throughout the game. I get it. It’s natural for young athletes to want that, but we’ll soon find out if the alternate path is truly more beneficial.”

Leslie specifically referenced MiLaysia Fulwiley’s significant choice to shift from South Carolina to LSU, a move many speculate stemmed from limited playing time under esteemed head coach Dawn Staley.
“Losing MiLaysia Fulwiley is challenging. That’s a tough break. I’m saying this as a fan; you can genuinely see the potential she has.”
“Playing at LSU, I’m sure she will have the opportunity to shine more.”
Despite the setback with Fulwiley’s departure, South Carolina and Staley — a long-time friend and former teammate of Leslie’s — have mitigated the blow by acquiring top scorer Ta’Niya Latson from Florida State and center Madina Okot from Mississippi State. Leslie’s reaction to these additions reflected her enthusiasm for both Staley and the Gamecocks.
“Landing one of the top scorers in the nation to your program is certainly a plus,” Leslie said. “Latson’s scoring capability is essential, and having dominant players is crucial. They seemingly needed more presence inside, so I believe these transfers will enhance South Carolina’s championship aspirations.”
Lisa Leslie emphasized that her advice to college athletes stems from a place of genuine concern, and like many fans, she is eagerly anticipating the upcoming NCAA season.
