A recent report suggests that LeBron James is not planning to accept the significant contract discount he had previously considered to assist the Los Angeles Lakers in acquiring a major player this offseason.
Following their unexpected exit from the 2025 NBA Playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves in just five games, Lakers fans are contemplating what steps the team should take this summer to bolster their roster around James and fellow star Luka Doncic. However, it appears that James is unwilling to lower his salary in order to help attract better talent.
LeBron James contract: $52.6 million player option (2025-26)
“James contemplated taking an even larger pay cut to help the Lakers secure an impactful player in free agency, with names like James Harden, DeMar DeRozan, Klay Thompson, and Jonas Valanciunas mentioned, according to league sources. The Lakers didn’t manage to acquire any of these players, and James ultimately signed for a deal closer to the maximum allowed.”
The future Hall of Famer has a player option worth $52.6 million this summer, placing him in a pivotal position. He must decide whether to maximize his earnings in one of his final career seasons or, if the rumors hold true, to do everything possible to pursue another championship. Committing over $52 million to the Lakers’ payroll would limit their ability to strengthen the team.
The Lakers require more impactful players, particularly in the frontcourt following their struggles against the Timberwolves’ big men. James has until June 29 to make his decision. Alternatively, he could opt out and observe the team’s moves before determining if he wants to remain or explore other options, with speculation suggesting this could be a viable route for him this summer.
