Deandre Ayton and Luka Doncic both entered the NBA through the same 2018 draft class. Ayton was selected first overall by the Phoenix Suns, while Doncic was the third overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks and was swiftly traded to the Dallas Mavericks.
After years of rivalry, Ayton now joins Doncic as a teammate following his signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. During his first press conference, Ayton shared his enthusiasm about partnering with Doncic, likening their collaboration to a fantasy scenario.
“This feels like a video game. Like somebody set it up. But honestly, this is an opportunity that I won’t take for granted. Luka is a once-in-a-generation player, and I’m happy to be his teammate. Hearing about the kind of shape he’s been in, he’s super ripped, and I’m finally glad to be on his side when he’s doing all of that,” Ayton expressed.

The Lakers have formally announced a two-year contract with Deandre Ayton worth $16.6 million to strengthen their center position. Discussing this opportunity, Ayton conveyed his dedication and passion for basketball.
“And I’m just truly excited. I’m a student of the game, and I love to play with a passion. The love I have received, and I haven’t even put on a jersey yet, shows how much I appreciate it,” he noted.
Zach Lowe Praises Ayton’s Fit with the Lakers
Zach Lowe, on his podcast, commended the Lakers’ acquisition of Ayton, predicting a positive integration with the team’s existing core players.
“I think he will be pretty good for the Lakers. He’s still got great feet & hands. Luka is going to make him look good… He’s like inches away from being a great player, just inches,” Lowe remarked.
While Ayton’s talent on the court is clear, concerns have been raised about his off-court behaviors in the past, which contributed to the Portland Trail Blazers deciding to buy him out. However, if the Lakers can manage him properly and offer a solid framework, Ayton possesses the potential to be the star big man the team has been seeking.
