The Dallas Cowboys are entering a challenging phase after narrowly missing the playoffs with a 7-10 record in the previous season. The team’s struggles on both offense and defense were evident as they ranked 21st in scoring and 31st in points conceded, prompting a coaching switch from Mike McCarthy to Brian Schottenheimer.
Although the Cowboys have made several roster changes, the question remains: have they done enough to bolster a defense that permitted the second-most points in the league? A promising opportunity has recently emerged that could be a good fit for Dallas.
Bleacher Report’s NFL analyst Moe Moton suggests that the Cowboys would benefit from signing former Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander, a two-time Pro Bowler who has recently entered free agency.
“The Dallas Cowboys should be interested in Alexander if he agrees to a one-year prove-it deal. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told reporters ‘there’s a good chance’ that cornerback Trevon Diggs may be sidelined at the start of the upcoming season.
If healthy, Alexander could team up with DaRon Bland while Diggs recuperates from knee surgery. Rookie third-round pick Shavon Revel Jr. is also on the road to recovery from a torn ACL, and 2022 first-round pick Kaiir Elam has not met expectations. Alexander is a top-tier cornerback who could significantly strengthen the Cowboys’ secondary.”
After opting to enter free agency rather than accept a reduced salary from his $16 million cap hit in Green Bay, it raises the question: why not reach out to Alexander?
Although he has only played 14 games over the past two seasons due to injury, his past performance showcases his ability to compete at an elite level. The Cowboys are in a position to take some calculated risks as they strive for a return to contention. It’s possible he could forge a successful second act in Dallas, where his talent may truly be highlighted.
