While NBA free agency kicked off over a month ago, Cam Thomas of the Brooklyn Nets is still without a contract. Despite a standout season, he finds himself in a challenging position, with no long-term agreement on the horizon.
Sources from Nets Daily indicate that Thomas is seeking a significant financial reward to place himself among the NBA’s top-paid young guards. He reportedly feels he deserves a salary comparable to or exceeding that of Jalen Green, Immanuel Quickley, and Tyler Herro.
“A league source mentioned to NetsDaily that Thomas evaluates his market based on similar players: Jalen Green, earning $33.3 million annually until 2027-28, when he has a $36 million player option; Immanuel Quickley, set to make $32.5 million over the next four years; and Tyler Herro, averaging $32 million in the same timeframe. This suggests that Thomas is looking for a starting salary around $30 million, likely aiming closer to $40 million,” the report stated.

In essence, Thomas considers himself among the elite tier of young NBA guards regarding salary expectations. He reportedly declined a two-year offer valued at approximately $14.1 million annually from the Nets.
The 23-year-old guard views himself as “one of the most elite playmaker scorers” in the league and anticipates that his contract will reflect that status.
Cam Thomas’ Contract Discussions Could Resemble Recent Short-Term Deals by the Nets
Tim Bontemps from ESPN provided insightful commentary on Cam Thomas’ current situation in his latest report, suggesting that Thomas may be on track for a short-term deal rather than a long-term contract.
“Out of four key players in restricted free agency this summer, Thomas is the most likely to play under his qualifying offer next season. If an agreement with Brooklyn comes to fruition, it is expected to mirror the recent one-year contracts with team options that the Nets inked with center Day’Ron Sharpe and forward Ziaire Williams earlier this offseason,” Bontemps noted.
Thomas brings a strong negotiating position, having averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game during the 2024-25 season. He joined the Nets in 2021 as the 27th overall pick.
