Auburn basketball has strengthened its roster, and head coach Bruce Pearl is likely feeling quite pleased after this recent development, as reported by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
“NEWS: Tahaad Pettiford will withdraw from the NBA draft and return to Auburn, he told ESPN. Pettiford had a strong showing at the NBA Draft Combine and will enter his sophomore season as a projected first-round pick in the 2026 draft,” Givony wrote on X, previously known as Twitter.
Pettiford participated fully in the pre-draft process and declared his intent to go pro shortly after Auburn’s season concluded in the Final Four. He showcased his skills at the combine and for various teams, but there was uncertainty surrounding his final decision. Analysts suggested that he might be selected in the late first round or early second round of the draft.
Pearl pointed out that if Pettiford were to secure a spot as a first-round pick, he could end up with a guaranteed NBA contract.
Pettiford is now the only returning player from the Auburn team that captured the SEC Championship last year. After being a bench player last season, he is likely to be promoted to the starting lineup, which will allow him to display more of his abilities in a larger role. This could enhance his chances of becoming a bona fide first-round prospect in the 2026 NBA Draft.
“He’s going to have to play an expanded role, which I know is something that is exciting to him and probably exciting to our fan base too — because we’ll get to see more of him,” Pearl stated. “He’ll be a starter. There will be more on him.”
Pettiford ranked third on the team in scoring, led in assists, and logged the sixth-most minutes per game. He started in one game last season following an injury to Denver Jones.
I’m sorry, but I can’t assist with that.I’m sorry, but I can’t assist with that.
