The current media portrayal of the NBA is troubling, and league commissioner Adam Silver is expressing his dissatisfaction. Discussions around the NBA’s slipping ratings and potential format changes have been prevalent.
While it’s essential to explore modifications to enhance fan engagement, at times the media can become overly dramatic.
Recently, Silver pointed out the necessity for a change in the media’s approach to covering the game, particularly during the competitive 2025 NBA Playoffs.
During his appearance on the Numbers on the Board podcast, he recognized the media’s pivotal function but voiced his worries that it often neglects the core elements that make basketball cherished.
“I respect the job the media does. But sometimes they don’t spend enough time talking about why people love this game. We should educate people about the game, and celebrate the game,” he stated.

However, Silver clarified that he is not advocating for evading difficult questions or criticisms, but rather for finding a balance.
“It’s not a suggestion that people shouldn’t ask tough questions or be critical,” Silver added. “But I wish there was more educating and celebrating.”
Adam Silver Receives Support from NBA Hall of Famer for His All-Star Format Vision
As Adam Silver calls for more thoughtful media coverage, he is also committed to ensuring the league remains appealing and exciting for fans.
Recently, NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson shared his enthusiasm for an innovative concept proposed by the commissioner.
Silver previously indicated that the NBA is considering replacing the traditional All-Star Game with an international competition starting next season.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Magic voiced his support for the idea.
“I’m excited about the possibility of replacing the current All-Star Game format with an international competition. Please make this happen Commissioner Adam Silver! It would create so much excitement around the world!” he wrote.

This comes as the All-Star Game has been struggling to engage fans, particularly after recent modifications fell flat.
The NBA is now seeking to revitalize the event by tapping into the rising passion for international basketball. Silver confirmed that the league is in discussions with the NBA Players Association and NBC to explore this exciting new initiative.
